My Favorite Stuffs

 

            My favorite stuff is my jacket. Actually, I have some jackets which I like them very much. Their colors are white, grey, dark grey, yellow, blue and also dark brown. But, the one that I like the most is the yellow one.


            My yellow jacket is quite big. It isn’t too thick, but it makes me warm. I usually wears it wherever I go until I find it becomes dirty. I like it very much.

            The jacket was given by my mother. She gave me that jacket when I was entering my third year in Senior High School. It keeps my skin from heat of the sun. The jacket is made from a soft materials so it makes me like it more and more.

            The part of my jacket is just like the other ordinary jackets. It has two pockets at the left and the right side where I usually puts my hands on. It has a hat that I like very much. The hat is very usefull in rainy days and also in a very hot days.

            My yellow jacket is my favorite stuff. It is from my mother. It is very usefull. It keeps me warm in every cold days and protect me from the sun in every hot days. The materials of that jacket are also very soft. That’s why I like my yellows jacket very much.

 

  1. The Generic Structure

The generic structure of the descriptive text is divided into three main parts; introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should tell the readers about the subject described. The body is where the writer shows readers the object by describing it. The conclusion consists of the summary and the additional interesting idea about the described object.

a. Introduction

My favorite stuff is my jacket. Actually, I have some jackets which I like them very much. Their colors are white, grey, dark grey, yellow, blue and also dark brown. But, the one that I like the most is the yellow one. (First Paragraph)

 
           

 

 

In the first paragraph, the student made a simple introduction in paragraph form. He identified the object he was going to describe, his favorite stuff that is the yellow jacket. However, besides giving the object described, he also put the detail such as the color of the jacket which should be put in the following paragraph as an idea. This made him has limited idea to discuss in the following paragraph as the body of the text.

b. Body

My yellow jacket is quite big. It isn’t too thick, but it makes me warm. I usually wears it wherever I go until I find it becomes dirty. I like it very much. (Second paragraph)

 
The body of this text contains of three parts which are stated in the second, the third, and the fourth paragraph. Each paragraph represents an idea which later will be described more clearly into a cohesive paragraph by showing the descriptive details of each idea.

 

 

In the second paragraph, he described about the size of the jacket. He described that his jacket is quite big, but he did not develop more specific descriptive details about it so that the reader can not imagine how big his jacket is. Besides, the following ideas do not explain the main idea itself. The underlined sentences indicate that it is such an impression and conclusion from the writer about the jacket, not the supporting ideas related to the size of the jacket as the descriptive details.

The jacket was given by my mother. She gave me that jacket when I was entering my third year in Senior High School. It keeps my skin from heat of the sun. The jacket is made from a soft materials so it makes me like it more and more. (Third paragraph)

 

 

 

In the third paragraph, it is not clear what the main idea actually is. It is such a little story about how he got the jacket which is not the descriptions of the jacket. Moreover, in the last sentence of the paragraph, he described the materials of the jacket which are not relevant with the previous ideas. It made this paragraph consist no descriptive details.

The part of my jacket is just like the other ordinary jackets. It has two pockets at the left and the right side where I usually puts my hands on. It has a hat that I like very much. The hat is very usefull in rainy days and also in a very hot days. (Fourth paragraph)

 

 

 

 

 In the fourth paragraph, he described about the parts of the jacket which has two pockets and a hat. It is the only paragraph which has more than one descriptive details which are relevant with the main idea though the details are still limited.

After analyzing each paragraph as the whole body, it can be seen that the writer organizes the ideas in simple paragraph forms with less supporting descriptive details which describe the main idea. The cohesiveness of sentences in each paragraph and the coherence among the body paragraphs are not well constructed.

c. Conclusion

My yellow jacket is my favorite stuff. It is from my mother. It is very usefull. It keeps me warm in every cold days and protect me from the sun in every hot days. The materials of that jacket are also very soft. That’s why I like my yellows jacket very much. (Fifth paragraph)

 

 

 

 

In the fifth paragraph, he concluded his descriptions of the yellow jacket which including some details which had been stated in the previous paragraph. However, he did not state the details in order. It seems that he just made a conclusion without paying attention with the overall organized idea. The details included do not cover all the ideas described in the body paragraphs.

 

  1. Language Features

There are some elements considered as the main important language features of the descriptive text include the sentence construction using simple present tense with the use of appropriate grammar and the word choice of precise sensory words and figurative language.

 

    1. Sentence construction

Every paragraph in a composition is built by some sentences include simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentences without neglecting the grammar appropriateness, so is the descriptive text.

 

1.      The use of simple sentences

There are 13 simple sentences in this composition. Some of them consist of error, such as:

                 It keeps me warm in every cold days à It should be every cold day.

 

2.      The use of compound sentences

There are 4 compound sentences in this composition. Some of them consist of error, such as:

The jacket is made from a soft materials so it makes me like it more and more à It should be made of and it should not use the article a.

 

3.      The use of complex sentences

There are 4 complex sentences in this composition. Some of them consist of error, such as:

It has two pockets at the left and the right side where I usually puts my hands on à It should be put.

 

4.      The use of compound-complex sentences

There is only one compound-complex sentence in this composition. Some of them consist of error, such as:

I usually wears it wherever I go until I find it becomes dirty à It should be wear.

Besides, the sentence construction of the descriptive uses specific tense which is simple present tense. Here are the examples:

-          Actually, I have some jackets which I like them very much.

-          My yellow jacket is quite big.

-          But, the one that I like the most is the yellow one.

      Nevertheless, the writer used past tense in some of the sentences stated in the third paragraph.

-          The jacket was given by my mother.

-          She gave me that jacket when I was entering my third year in Senior High School.

 

    1. Word choice of sensory words and figurative language

Actually, the student described his yellow jacket with common descriptive language, such as:

-          My yellow jacket is quite big.

-          The jacket is made from a soft materials so it makes me like it more and more.

He did not make such sensory words that help the readers to have clear pictures and feelings about the described jacket. Besides, there is no figurative language at all that makes it tells rather than shows. The readers can not imagine how big and soft the jacket is.
